Assistant Laboratory Manager at TIGS-CI

The Tata Institute for Genetics and Society (TIGS-CI), a new, non-profit research entity supported by the Tata Trusts, has been operational since 2018 as an autonomous Center at inStem, within the campus of the National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS), in Bangalore, India (TIGS-India). Research at TIGS is focused on harnessing new genetic technologies, such as genome editing for human health and agriculture. Specific areas of focus are vector-borne diseases, rice genetics, human hematopoietic stem cells and reversal of antibiotic resistance. TIGS also partners actively with a sister institute located at the University of California, San Diego (TIGS-UCSD) for scientific exchange and capacity building, as well as with several other academic and research institutions in India.

Job responsibilities:

Under the general supervision of the Program Manager, the Asst. laboratory manager will be responsible for facilitating the day-to-day activities of the laboratories at TIGS-India and will help the program manager to facilitate and coordinate logistics for TIGS meetings, travel, projects and visitors. Specific tasks include facilitating administration of purchasing, customs, MTAs, calibration, contracts, import/export, as well as the preventive and corrective maintenance, and repair of all lab equipment. Lab management will ensure that good and efficient business practices are followed for the procurement of equipment and supplies and the incumbent must be able to understand technical specifications provided by TIGS scientists and communicate these clearly with vendors. Expertise is also required with ERP systems, timely product procurement via an indenting process, follow-through on ordered items, and standard software packages such as Microsoft word, Excel and PowerPoint. Coordination with the IT team is also required. Additional responsibilities include developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the laboratory, electronic record keeping, organizing warranties and other procurement-related documents and familiarity with all aspects of project, travel and meeting management. The incumbent must understand common experimental protocols of the laboratory, including knowledge of basic biochemistry, genetics, as well as molecular and cell biology methods.

Essential Qualification:

A Master’s degree in Life/Biological Sciences (molecular biology/cell biology/biochemistry etc.) is required, and at least 5-7 years of lab management experience in an industry/research organization is

preferred. The individual must be a proactive, solution-oriented problem solver who is comfortable and agile about moving in new directions, and must have excellent English communication (writing and verbal) and inter-personal skills.
